Dental Technology to Look for in the New Year

Technology has been shaping the dental world for years now, but with the New Year comes new dental technology to get excited about. Being the Dental Geeks that we are, here are some exciting digital dental technologies to keep your eye on in 2014.

The Canary Dental Caries Detection System

The Canary system is a dental technology device that can be used to detect and monitor tooth decay in its early stages. It works as a pain-free, non-invasive, full decay detection system of everything from enamel surfaces, root surfaces, biting surfaces as well as between and around your teeth – even the ones with existing fillings. The system works by using a low-power pulsating laser to scan your patients’ teeth for any presence of tooth decay or dental caries. The Canary system uses this laser light to release harmless heat onto the tooth. In return the reflected heat and light will provide information about the presence of tooth decay beyond the surface of the tooth. This new system can change dental treatment with its preventive action. Instead of patients waiting for a cavity to advance, leading to extensive treatment, dentists can now monitor and detect any early decay.

Identafi – Oral Cancer Screening Device

The OrCA reported that the five-year mortality rate of Oral Cancer is higher than cervical cancer and prostate cancer, and kills one person every hour of every day. That’s why we plan on keeping our eyes on the Identafi Oral Cancer Screening Device and ones like this. This small, compact device uses the power of wavelengths to detect mucosal membrane abnormalities that may be cancerous. How is this different from other fluorescence technologies and dye systems out there? Identafi uses a multi-spectrum process that includes three distinct wavelengths. The device is intended to be used by all dentists, hygienists, oral surgeons, primary care practitioners and ENT head & neck surgeons.

MouthWatch – In-home Oral Health Monitoring System

MouthWatch is a technology device created to increase your patient’s engagement in their oral health, hygiene and dental care. This system is made up of three parts – the camera, the software and the mobile app. The intraoral camera is designed to be used by your patients to take pictures and videos of their own mouth at home when they have a concern. From here the patient will upload their picture and videos to the software to share with their dentist. The details provided in the scan provide useful information allowing the dentist to plan ahead knowing what work needs to be done when the patient comes in for their appointment. The mobile application serves the same function, but for people on the go. With this system patients can ask questions, share concerns and make appointments all in one place without the back and forth phone calls and guess and check diagnoses.

ProJet 1200 – 3D Printer

3D printing is the next exciting digital technology revolutionizing the dental world. The ProJet 1200 is just one of these 3D printers pumping out detailed micro-SLA prints quickly and accurately. Working with green materials, the printer works economically to print detailed parts for casting, prototyping and end-use parts. With fast print times this digital technology is allowing the dental industry to keep up with the constant need for these precise parts. Having these compact, portable machines ready to use in the dental lab will eliminate the time constraints and transform dental technology as we know it today.

Freedom Oral Care System (FOCS)

Freedom Oral Care system is a product introduced to help improve the daily oral and dental care of the elderly as well as people with physical and/or mental disabilities. According to Dr. Stephen H. Wolpo, DDS, “80 percent of nursing home residents have fair-to-poor oral health.” This device features a three-part system that all works collectively to deliver proper oral care that is essentially hands-free. The three-part system includes mechanical/brushing, iontophoretic and irrigation. The mobile, hands-free system cleans the entire mouth as well as applies a protective element to the teeth. The Freedom Oral Care System is operated via a master control unit and specific software that seamlessly links the patient and the providers via wireless monitoring. With technology like this, it reduces the focus on everyday oral care issues and allows the focus to be on preventive treatment.

With all these revolutionary digital dental techniques, we are beyond excited as to what 2014 will reveal in the dental industry. Dentistry is continuing to wow us with technology and as official Dental Geeks, we promise to be all over it.
