One Year in the Tooth Biz
This July, I celebrated my one-year anniversary of working in the dental industry. I studied communications in college, and being the jock that I am, found myself working at a sports communications company right after graduation. After two years, and multiple lunches where my all-male coworkers rattled off sports trivia and statistics for an hour straight, I knew I needed a change. Enter Lanmark360.
From my first steps into Lanmark’s building I had a great feeling that has only grown since I was introduced to the Lanmark team, clients, and friends. Although I couldn’t have predicted I’d be working in dental, I’m glad fate has landed me here.
So, after my first year (hopefully of many) in dental, I’d like to share five things I’ve learned:
1. Dentistry has its own celebrities. I know you hear me, Esther Wilkins. Need I say more?
2. You’ll make friends fast. Simply put, people are nice. After a good number of dental conventions and a plethora of introductions, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some really wonderful people. I enjoy client dinners and look forward to work events, two things I’m lucky to say.
3. The industry is “social.†Whether I’m flipping through industry pubs, walking the aisles of a convention center, or scrolling through my e-newsletters, advertisements are screaming “Like us on Facebook,” “Follow us on Twitter,” and “Subscribe to our blog.” It’s fast, it’s efficient, and the dental industry is on top of utilizing these social networks to communicate.
4. You’ll find pleasure in flossing. This might be the most shocking statement of 2011, but I’ve learned to love to floss. Being surrounded by dental professionals, I take more pride in my smile and oral health than ever before.
5. Dentists are fun. A year ago, I was intimidated by drills and Novocain. It turns out that dentists have a sense of humor, enjoy a cold beverage, and even hit the dance floor occasionally. Who knew?
Industry veterans: What would you add to the list? Let me know by dropping a comment below, or e-mailing me at mtranchina@lanmark360.com. Thanks, and looking forward to reading your comments!
